Development After the release of Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider was in the process of writing. During the game development process, some of the development team was asked to support the release of Rise of the Tomb Raider. In order to support the release of Rise of the Tomb Raider, there was a clash between the development team and Rise of the Tomb Raider art team. In an interview with Kotaku, Gao stated that the art team didn't believe in the strength of the experience the game was bringing and what the title was trying to achieve. He added that the art team thought it was "bad to try to make something 'different' for the sake of it" but didn't think it was the "correct direction" for the game. Gao felt that it was the role of the art team to "push the new style, using their own creativity to make it more challenging, more provocative, more personal, and more emotional." This clash led to a lack of communication between the art and development team for several months. Originally, the game was going to be the third game in the Tomb Raider series.
